Washington Township’s documented history dates back to 1796, when three Revolutionary War veterans surveyed the region. Then, the township was mainly forest, cut through with many creeks and small waterways. Several years later, the township’s first industry was established with two sawmills. The community would continue to grow slowly and quietly for the next 150 years. Sometime in the mid-20th century, residential growth picked up, as home seekers began to recognize the excellent quality of life available in this section of Montgomery County.
The Centerville-Washington Township Historical Society maintains records and artifacts about the history of the community. Three sites which offer a look into the early years of the township are Aaron Nutt Cottage, Asahel Wright Community Center, and Walton House Museum. Walton House and Asahel Wright Community Center are both authentic 1800’s stone structures. Today they are used to display lifestyle exhibits about the 19th century, including dishes and clothes. Aaron Nutt Cottage houses many of the historical society’s collections and is used as a local history and genealogy research center. The gardens at Walton House, displaying medicinal plants and colorful flowers, are worth a visit as well. Public recreational spaces are managed by the Centerville-Washington Park District. The community boasts more than 40 area parks, covering about 9,000 acres of land. Park facilities include hiking trails, sledding hills, play equipment, picnic shelters and sports fields and courts. Residents also have access to an extensive recreation center, featuring indoor pools, indoor and outdoor running tracks and two gymnasiums. The complex is used primarily for sports lessons, swimming lessons, art and dance classes, plus many special events. The township is also home to an award-winning library system. Hennen’s American Public Library Rating Index ranked Washington-Centerville Library as the best in the nation. The library has two branches: Woodbourne Library and Centerville Library. Average temperatures in Washington Township range from high-20s in January to the mid-70s in July and August. Precipitation occurs throughout the year at a rate of 9-13 inches per month; total annual precipitation averages just less than 40 inches. Snowfall is common in the cooler months, primarily December through March. Despite the moisture, residents still enjoy sunshine about 53% of the time. |
